About the Growers:
Las Damas de San Ignacio—‘The Women of San Ignacio’—is a special lot of coffee produced by women members of the Cooperative Agraria Frontera San Ignacio (COOPAFSI) in Northern Peru. The Cooperative was established in 1969 with the goal of improving the livelihoods of coffee producers and their families in the region, and has grown from ten founding producers to over 360. In 2016, a group of women producers and board members formed a sub-committee within the cooperative to export coffee under the name “Las Damas de San Ignacio,” allowing them to create a new brand and distinct cup profiles for their lots. The women have joined in other projects in their communities, including communications classes at their computer lab, sewing clubs, selling produce at farmer's markets, and education programs on their farms aimed at improving coffee production and quality. The women of the Las Damas committee are also responsible for distributing loans to co-op members, which they can use to improve their coffee operations and even provide for healthcare needs for their families.
